Where 笑 comes from
A person 夭 with a big grin ⺮
笑 (xiào), an HSK 2 character, means “to laugh” and “to laugh at”. It is HSK 2 in the 2025 syllabus, up from level 1 in the 2021 standard. It is a character whose parts combine into its meaning. On its own it is an HSK 2 word; it also forms 好笑 (“laughable”), 笑话 (“joke”) and 开玩笑 (“to play a joke”). Japanese reads it wara-u, “laugh”, as a JLPT N3 kanji.
As a top-bottom character it splits into ⺮ (“bamboo”, the radical), strokes 1–6; 夭 (“to die prematurely”), strokes 7–10, written the top first.
The two models differ in shape, so our comparison does not claim an order; compare the numbered frames yourself (10 strokes in Japanese, 10 strokes in Chinese).
