JLPT kanji by level
Five lists from N5, the first, to N1, the last: 2,211 kanji in all, each with its stroke order, a quiz and one PDF per level.
The five levels
| Level | Kanji | Average strokes | Also HSK characters | Pages here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N5 | 79 | 5.8 | 63 | 79 |
| N4 | 166 | 8.5 | 122 | 166 |
| N3 | 367 | 9.8 | 252 | 0 |
| N2 | 367 | 10.1 | 222 | 0 |
| N1 | 1,232 | 11.4 | 619 | 0 |
Each level adds kanji to the ones before; the counts are for the new kanji of that level only. N1 adds 1,232, more than the other four levels together.
About these lists
The Japan Foundation and JEES stopped publishing kanji lists when the test was reformed in 2010. The lists used everywhere, including here, are Jonathan Waller's, made from the old lists and past papers and shared under a Creative Commons licence. They are a good study plan rather than a promise of what the test will ask. If you are starting out, take N5 first, then N4; the hiragana chart comes before both.
