Hiragana quiz

Pick rows and a mode: read the hiragana and choose its sound, type the romaji, or see the sound and write the character with your finger. Mistakes come back sooner.

The quiz needs JavaScript. The hiragana chart works without it.

Three ways to answer

Read: a hiragana appears and you choose its sound from four. Type: you type the romaji, so there is nothing to guess from. Write: you see the sound and draw the character from memory, and each stroke is checked for where it starts, where it ends and which way it goes. Writing is the mode that sticks, because it is how you will use the script on paper.

How the repeats work

Every hiragana sits in one of five boxes on this device. A right answer moves it up a box, a wrong one sends it back to the first, and the quiz draws more often from the low boxes, so the ones you miss keep coming back until they stop being hard. A day with at least one finished round adds to your streak, shown above the quiz.

Before you start

If the shapes are new, go through the hiragana chart row by row first; each character page has the stroke order and words that use it. 35 of the 46 have a look-alike listed on their page.
