How to write 住 (zhù, “to live”)

住 (zhù), an HSK 1 character, means “to live”, “to stop” and “result complement”. China and Japan order its strokes differently: Chinese stroke 5, going rightwards, is the 6th in Japanese schools; Chinese stroke 6, going downwards, is the 5th in Japanese schools. On its own it is an HSK 1 word; it also forms 住院 (“to stay in hospital”), 入住 (“to check in”) and 住房 (“housing”). Japanese reads it juu, “dwell”, as a JLPT N4 kanji.
