How to write 大 (dà, “big”)

大, an HSK 1 character, is read dà for “big” and “older”, and also dài (“see 大夫”). As an overlapping character it splits into 一 (“one”), stroke 1; 人 (“person”), strokes 2–3, written the first part first. Its 3 strokes put it among the simplest at HSK 1. On its own it is an HSK 1 word; it also forms 大学 (“university”), 大家 (“everyone”) and 大学生 (“university student”). Japanese reads it tai, “large”, as a JLPT N5 kanji.
