Where 亮 comes from
A lit oil lamp
亮 (liàng), an HSK 1 character, means “bright”, “to shine” and “loud and clear”. It is HSK 1 in the 2025 syllabus, down from level 2 in the 2021 standard. It is a picture-like character. On its own it is an HSK 4 word; it also forms 漂亮 (“pretty”), 月亮 (“the moon”) and 明亮 (“bright”). Japanese reads it ryou, “clear”, as a JLPT N1 kanji.
As a top-middle-bottom character it splits into 亠 (“lid”, the radical), strokes 1–2; 口 (“mouth”), strokes 3–5; 冖几, strokes 6–9, written the top first.
Japanese and Chinese draw all 9 strokes in the same order and direction, by our stroke-by-stroke comparison.
