件 (jiàn), an HSK 1 character, means “component”, “item” and “classifier”. It is HSK 1 in the 2025 syllabus, down from level 2 in the 2021 standard. It is also a measure word: CC-CEDICT pairs it with 42 nouns, 上衣, 中山服 and 事儿 among them. As a left-right character it splits into 亻 (“person”, the radical), strokes 1–2; 牛 (“cow”), strokes 3–6, written the left part first. On its own it is an HSK 1 word; it also forms 邮件 (“mail”), 文件 (“document”) and 条件 (“condition”). Japanese reads it ken, “affair”, as a JLPT N3 kanji.
