How to write 和 (hé, “and”)

和, an HSK 1 character, is read hé for “and” and “sum”, and also hè (“to compose a poem in reply using the same rhyme ”) and hú (“to complete a set in mahjong or playing cards”). As a left-right character it splits into 禾 (“grain plant”), strokes 1–5; 口 (“mouth”, the radical), strokes 6–8, written the left part first. On its own it is an HSK 1 word; it also forms 暖和 (“warm”), 和平 (“peace”) and 温和 (“mild”). Japanese reads it wa, “harmony”, as a JLPT N3 kanji.
