How to write 子 (zǐ, “son”)

子, an HSK 1 character, is read zǐ for “son” and “child”, and also zi (“noun suffix, as in 椅子 "chair"”). As an overlapping character it splits into 了 (“completed action marker”), strokes 1–2; 一 (“one”), stroke 3, written the first part first. Its 3 strokes put it among the simplest at HSK 1. On its own it is an HSK 3 word; it also forms 儿子 (“son”), 包子 (“baozi”) and 孩子 (“child”). Japanese reads it shi, “child”, as a JLPT N5 kanji.
