校, an HSK 1 character, is read xiào for “school” and “field officer”, and also jiào (“to check”). As a left-right character it splits into 木 (“tree”, the radical), strokes 1–4; 交 (“to hand over”), strokes 5–10, written the left part first. Among the HSK words it appears in 学校 (“school”), 校长 (“president”) and 校园 (“campus”). Japanese reads it kou, “exam”, as a JLPT N5 kanji.
