病 — how to write the kanji for “ill”

病 (“ill” and “sick”) is a JLPT N4 kanji taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is the 384th most used kanji. KANJIDIC2 gives it 2 on readings and 3 kun readings, so the word decides how you say it. Its parts sit one inside another: 疒 (“sickness”, its radical), strokes 1–5; 丙 (“third class”), strokes 6–10, each finished before the next. On its own it is the word yamai, “illness; disease”. Its common words take the reading byou: 病院 (“hospital”), 病気 (“illness”), 水俣病 (“Minamata disease”) and 糖尿病 (“diabetes”). Chinese reads it bìng, “illness”, at HSK 1.
