出 — how to write the kanji for “exit”

出 means “exit”, “leave” and “go out”; it is a JLPT N5 kanji, taught in first grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (13th). Its Japanese stroke 1, a vertical, is the 3rd stroke in the Chinese order. On its own it is the word de, “coming out; going out”. Read shutsu, it forms 出身 (“one's origin”), 輸出 (“export”) and 出場 (“participation”); the native reading da-su gives 出す (“to take out”). Chinese reads it chū, “to go out”, at HSK 1.
