長 — how to write the kanji for “long”

長 means “long”, “leader” and “superior”; it is a JLPT N5 kanji, taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (12th). Its Japanese stroke 1, a vertical, is the 2nd stroke in the Chinese order. On its own it is the word chou, “head; chief”. Its common words take the reading chou: 会長 (“president”), 成長 (“growth”), 社長 (“company president”) and 議長 (“chair”). Mainland Chinese writes it 长 (cháng, “long”), an HSK 2 character.
