同 — how to write the kanji for “same”

同 means “same”, “agree” and “equal”; it is a JLPT N4 kanji, taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (15th). Its parts sit one inside another: 冂 (“wide”), strokes 1–2; 一 (“one”), stroke 3; 口 (“mouth”, its radical), strokes 4–6, each finished before the next. On its own it is the word dou, “the same; the said”. Its common words take the reading dou: 共同 (“cooperation”), 同市 (“same city”), 同日 (“the same day”) and 同時 (“same time”). Chinese reads it tóng, “like”, at HSK 1.
