度 — how to write the kanji for “degrees”

度 means “degrees”, “occurrence” and “time”; it is a JLPT N4 kanji, taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is the 110th most used kanji. KANJIDIC2 gives it 3 on readings and 2 kun readings, so the word decides how you say it. Its parts sit one inside another: 广 (“shelter”, its radical), strokes 1–3; 廿 (“twenty”), strokes 4–7; 又 (“again”), strokes 8–9, each finished before the next. On its own it is the word tabi, “time (three times, each time, etc.); times”. Its common words take the reading do: 制度 (“system”), 程度 (“degree”), 今度 (“this time”) and 一度 (“once”). Chinese reads it dù, “to spend”, at HSK 4.
