注 — how to write the kanji for “pour”

注 means “pour”, “irrigate” and “shed (tears)”; it is a JLPT N4 kanji, taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is the 497th most used kanji. Its Japanese stroke 6, a vertical, is the 7th stroke in the Chinese order. KANJIDIC2 files it under the radical 水 (“water”). On its own it is the word chuu, “annotation; explanatory note”. Read chuu, it forms 注目 (“notice”), 受注 (“accepting an order”) and 注意 (“attention”); the native reading soso-gu gives 注ぐ (“to pour (into)”) and 注ぎ込む (“to pour in (liquids)”). Chinese reads it zhù, “an annotation”, at HSK 3.
