題 — how to write the kanji for “topic”

題 (“topic” and “subject”) is a JLPT N4 kanji taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (96th). Its parts sit one inside another: 是 (“just so”), strokes 1–9; 頁 (“page”, its radical), strokes 10–18, each finished before the next. Its 18 strokes make it one of the longest to write at N4. On its own it is the word dai, “title; subject”. Its common words take the reading dai: 問題 (“question”), 課題 (“subject”), 話題 (“topic”) and 問題点 (“the problem (at issue)”). Mainland Chinese writes it 题 (tí, “topic”), an HSK 1 character.
