Where 哥 comes from
One person talking 可 over another 可
哥 (gē), an HSK 1 character, means “elder brother”. It is a character whose parts combine into its meaning. Dictionaries list it under the radical 口 (“mouth”). It is part of the HSK word 哥哥 (“older brother”), and of 一哥 (“top-ranked male”) and 二哥 (“second brother”). Japanese reads it ka, “big brother”.
As a top-bottom character it splits into 可 (“can”), strokes 1–5; 可 (“can”), strokes 6–10, written the top first.
The two models differ in shape, so our comparison does not claim an order; compare the numbered frames yourself (10 strokes in Japanese, 10 strokes in Chinese).
