間 — how to write the kanji for “interval”

間 (“interval” and “space”) is a JLPT N5 kanji taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (33rd). KANJIDIC2 gives it 2 on readings and 3 kun readings, so the word decides how you say it. Its parts sit one inside another: 門 (“gate”, its radical), strokes 1–8; 日 (“day”), strokes 9–12, each finished before the next. On its own it is the word aida, “space (between); gap”. Read kan, it forms 年間 (“(period of) a year”), 時間 (“time”) and 期間 (“period”); the native reading ma gives 仲間 (“companion”). Mainland Chinese writes it 间 (jiān, “between”), an HSK 1 character.
