借 — how to write the kanji for “borrow”

借 (“borrow” and “rent”) is a JLPT N4 kanji taught in fourth grade in Japan. Its parts sit side by side: 亻 (“person”), strokes 1–2; 昔 (“once upon a time”), strokes 3–10, each finished before the next. Read shaku, it forms 借金 (“debt”), 借地 (“leased land”) and 借家 (“rented house”); the native reading ka-riru gives 借入金 (“loan”) and 借り入れ (“borrowing (money)”). Chinese reads it jiè, “to borrow”, at HSK 3.
