場 — how to write the kanji for “location”

場 (“location” and “place”) is a JLPT N4 kanji taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (52nd). Its parts sit side by side: 土 (“soil”, its radical), strokes 1–3; 昜 (“open”), strokes 4–12, each finished before the next. Its 12 strokes make it one of the longest to write at N4. On its own it is the word ba, “place; spot”. Its native reading ba leads in its common words, as in 場所 (“place”) and 市場 (“(town) market”); read jou it forms 工場 (“factory”). Mainland Chinese writes it 场 (chǎng, “large place”), an HSK 2 character.
