終 — how to write the kanji for “end”
終 (“end” and “finish”) is a JLPT N4 kanji taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is the 256th most used kanji. KANJIDIC2 gives it 1 on reading and 6 kun readings, so the word decides how you say it. Its parts sit side by side: 糸 (“thread”, its radical), strokes 1–6; 冬 (“winter”), strokes 7–11, each finished before the next. Read shuu, it forms 最終 (“last”), 終結 (“end”) and 最終的 (“final”); the native reading o-waru gives 終値 (“closing price”) and 終わり (“end”). Mainland Chinese writes it 终 (zhōng, “end”), an HSK 3 character.
