How to write ふ (fu) in hiragana
ふ belongs to the h-row, yet it is read fu rather than hu: the sound shifted, and the spelling follows the sound. It grew out of the cursive form of the kanji 不 (“negative”). Its four strokes begin at the top, heading down and right then down and left, and the last one finishes at the bottom right. Words that start with it include 二人 (“two persons”), 不況 (“(economic) depression”), 不安 (“anxiety”) and 夫婦 (“married couple”).
