後 — how to write the kanji for “behind”

後 means “behind”, “back” and “later”; it is a JLPT N5 kanji, taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (26th). KANJIDIC2 gives it 2 on readings and 5 kun readings, so the word decides how you say it. Its parts: 彳 (“step”, its radical), strokes 1–3; 幺 (“short thread”), strokes 4–6; 夂 (“go slowly”), strokes 7–9, each finished before the next. On its own it is the word ato, “behind; rear”. Its common words take the reading go: 今後 (“from now on”), 午後 (“afternoon”), 戦後 (“postwar period”) and 最後 (“end”). Mainland Chinese writes it 后 (hòu, “back”), an HSK 1 character.
