業 — how to write the kanji for “business”
業 means “business”, “vocation” and “arts”; it is a JLPT N4 kanji, taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (43rd). Its parts: 业 (“business”), strokes 1–5; 羊 (“sheep”), strokes 6–9; 木 (“tree”, its radical), strokes 10–13, each finished before the next. Its 13 strokes make it one of the longest to write at N4. On its own it is the word gyou, “work; business”. Its common words take the reading gyou: 事業 (“business”), 企業 (“enterprise”), 作業 (“work”) and 業界 (“business world”). Mainland Chinese writes it 业 (yè, “line of business”), an HSK 3 character.
