者 — how to write the kanji for “someone”

者 (“someone” and “person”) is a JLPT N4 kanji taught in third grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (38th). KanjiVG finds it inside 29 other kanji, 偖 (“well”), 儲 (“be profitable”) and 堵 (“fence”) among them. KANJIDIC2 files it under the radical 老 (“old man”). On its own it is the word mono, “person”. Read sha, it forms 患者 (“patient”), 業者 (“trader”) and 記者 (“reporter”); the native reading mono gives 若者 (“young person”). Chinese reads it zhě, “one who ...”, at HSK 3.
