計 — how to write the kanji for “plot”
計 means “plot”, “plan” and “scheme”; it is a JLPT N4 kanji, taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is the 228th most used kanji. It is also where hiragana け came from. Its parts sit side by side: 言 (“say”, its radical), strokes 1–7; 十 (“ten”), strokes 8–9, each finished before the next. On its own it is the word kei, “plan; meter”. Its common words take the reading kei: 計画 (“plan”), 合計 (“sum total”), 設計 (“plan”) and 統計 (“statistics”). Mainland Chinese writes it 计 (jì, “to calculate”), an HSK 4 character.
