時 — how to write the kanji for “time”

時 (“time” and “hour”) is a JLPT N5 kanji taught in second grade in Japan. In newspapers it is one of the hundred most used kanji (16th). Its parts sit side by side: 日 (“day”, its radical), strokes 1–4; 寺 (“Buddhist temple”), strokes 5–10, each finished before the next. Its 10 strokes make it one of the longest to write at N5. On its own it is the word toki, “time; hour”. Its common words take the reading ji: 一時 (“one o'clock”), 同時 (“same time”), 当時 (“at that time”) and 時事 (“events of the day”). Mainland Chinese writes it 时 (shí, “time”), an HSK 1 character.
